Frank's Senior Capstone Project

Ever since I was a
little kid, I have had a passion for helping others and caring for their well
being. These characteristics have led me to pursue the field of medicine and
research. Cancer affects one in every three people. It doesn’t only affect the
patient, but also their friends and family. This disease has personally
affected me since my grandmother and aunt were diagnosed with cancer. Finding a
cure for cancer is very important to me so we can prevent this disease from
harming other families. Since the effects of this disease have personally
touched me, it has inspired me to learn more about it and become involved in
helping to find the cure.
Promotion of the James Cancer Hospital |
The topic of my
capstone project is investigating why we have not yet found a cure for
cancer. To answer my essential question, I made it my goal to examine my
topic from all angles. I have been in contact with some of the top oncologists and cancer researchers in the country. My mentor
is Dr. Farrar, professor of surgery and director of surgical oncology at the
James Cancer Hospital. Throughout the process
of my project, I have worked with Dr. Farrar and had the opportunity to shadow
him in surgery. This experience allowed me to see how
doctors treat patients with cancer and witness the latest robotic technology. I also got the chance to go to Carson Lab
to observe cancer research. This enhanced my knowledge on how researchers are
trying to come up with new and improved cancer treatments. For my service, I
helped plan and organize the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. The cruise was a
fundraiser for the Stefanie Speilman Fund, which raises money for breast cancer
research. Being involved in this project has connected me with the medical
field and reassured my decision to study medicine and eventually become a
doctor.
I decided to present you this information on a website so that I can inform my audience on the basics of cancer. Mostly everybody uses the internet and therefore this website is more accessible than a scrapbook or poster. As you can see, the background of this website is a picture of cancer at a cellular level. This is what a cancerous specimen would look like under a microscope. My inspiration is to share my experiences and raise cancer awareness. Thank you for your time to adventure this website.
